There are two other articles on a serial port adapter for Windows.Below is the instructions for Linux and how to connect your serial adapter while using Linux. This should work for most people using Linux and a serial adapter or usb to rs232 driver which is being discussed.
Hi guys, I hope this post will help anyone out there as I too needed help with this, so after searching the web for the best part of last night i have decided to sign up and post what i leant on here in one place.
The drivers are already installed so dont worry about those but you can check using these commands:
will print the following to your screen with the converter/cable attached
Code: Select all
with the converter disconnected use the following command 'lsusb'now attached the cable again and re-run the same command
Code: Select all
Notice the new line added? this is your device. So everything seems to work. expect you wont be able to connect (I’m using cisco router/switch via the console port) go a head and try yourself then come back.So now if you have tested and it doesn't work you can try a quick and dirty trick (this will only work if the converter/cable is connected and will remain working as long as you do not unplug it.. if you do plug it back in and re-enter the code below
Now if you had entered the code everything should be working, if it isn't and you checked you entered the code correctly then you need more help.
So we have so far, checked to see if the drivers are installed and working, the device is seen and we can connect. So lets fix it so you do not have to change the permission every time you re-boot. or unplug the cable. To do so enter the code below, re-boot and happy days all is good

Code: Select all
I hope this will help anyone like me who was unaware permissions needed to be changed to communicate via a usb to serial interface
